R&D: Resilience for Organisational Change

placeholder

Resilience is an increasingly important attribute in today’s world of change, and increasingly important for both managers, leaders and staff.  A recent ILM Survey (April 2009) of CEOs of SMEs found that resilient characteristics were the attributes these CEOs most wanted from their middle and senior managers.  At Taylor Clarke, we have been researching this area for the past year, in a bid to provide a user friendly and relevant product for our clients.  We are nearing the end stages of our piloting and evaluation, and have several clients interested in resilience-building consultancy interventions.  We look forward to collaborating with our clients in moving this product forward in 2010.

Through our research we arrived at a Model of Resilience for Organisational Change.  This consists of 7 ingredients, clustered under three headings:

(1)  “ME”: my attributes which enable me to be resilient in the face of change (Self-Belief, Self-Awareness, and an awareness of my Strengths);

(2)  “IT”: how I view and deal with the change, or indeed, drive the change (Problem Solving, Wider Perspectives and Realistic Optimism)

(3)  “THEM”: how I communicate with and relate to others (Reaching Out).

We have also developed tools to enable managers to diagnose the resilience of the team, and to support them in understanding the actions needed to build the team’s resilience – particularly in order to help prepare the team for an upcoming change – that is, building the capacity of the team for change.

Tools include: 360˚ resilience feedback; self-assessment against resilience model; team resilience diagnostic; organisational resilience diagnostic.  Our model starts with the individual, and extrapolates to the team, and finally, to the organisation level.
