An Update on Yemen LNG Project Excellence

placeholder

Working with the managers and employees at YLNG at all levels over the last 5 months has been a truly fascinating and rewarding experience for the TCP facilitator team.

We continue to see huge potential and the solid foundations on which to build a truly world class organisation…..and a workforce that is beginning to believe the changes they desire are there to be had if we all embrace the YLNG values and principles of Project excellence

As the weeks have unfolded we have observed many specific examples of actions that will deliver real short term business impact –

  • Personal commitments to change and a strong recognition of the need to ….. “Change how we do things around here”
  • A real thirst for applying learning and personal development
  • More, better organised team meetings to share ideas for improvement and collaborative problem solving, not just reviewing results
  • A growing realisation that while delivering on the task is key, it is also important to adopt a management style that puts a more balanced emphasis on developing, supporting and challenging people and teams to be the best they can be.
  • More communication within and between teams.
  • More management visibility and readiness to invest in 1:1 time with their staff to share both positive and constructive feedback
  • Taking steps to resolve long running conflicts….with lots more listening.
  • A focus on understanding what is motivating individuals and teams and taking steps to remove any barriers to motivation
  • A growing willingness to openly challenge people whose behaviour is not helping YLNG progress and serving to hold others back
  • More comfort with giving and receiving feedback, both positive and constructive…which is key to helping each other live the values
  • More regular and meaningful dialogue between managers and employees to jointly resolve issues and identify improvements in a way that generates higher commitment and personal development.
  • People not waiting for managers “permission” to act, but taking responsibility themselves to explore the impact of PE techniques

There is always some hesitancy and scepticism around the value and business impact of projects like Project Excellence in the early stages, particularly when you have already set yourself some other challenging goals. However the recent workshop debates are refreshingly different to earlier discussions. The discussions have moved encouragingly quickly from “Why Project Excellence” to “How can we support each other, maintain PE momentum and convert our learning experiences into tangible results”

We look forward immensely to the next stage of the journey…working with your teams, rolling out similar development programmes in Balhaf and supporting you with a number of other new initiatives like personal coaching to support converting your learning efforts into results.

Expectations are high and belief in personal, team and organisational potential is growing. We strongly believe that organisations don’t change, its individual people who change…in their own way, at their own pace and by supporting each other…and we look forward to helping each and every one of you develop personally to be the role models delivering the YLNG Vision

And as you may remember from the workshops, in relation to the knowledge, ideas, tools and techniques shared…..

  • You hear it and you forget it?
  • You see others doing it and you understand it?
  • You try it for yourself and you truly believe it?

Every journey starts with one small, first step and we wish you well on your chosen path to achieving excellence for yourself and YLNG

Alistair Brown, Project Manager of YLNG Project Excellence
